Why organisations must move beyond static spaces

A new report by MapsPeople and WORKTECH Academy explores how spatial intelligence is transforming workplaces from static infrastructures into responsive, data-driven environments

Most buildings are designed as static environments – fixed layouts, disconnected systems and tools that rarely reflect how people actually move through space. Yet expectations of physical environments are changing rapidly.

Across workplaces, campuses and transport hubs, users increasingly expect environments that respond to their needs in real time – helping them navigate, locate colleagues, find available spaces or adjust conditions with minimal friction.

A new report by MapsPeople in collaboration with WORKTECH Academy, Beyond Static Spaces: The Intelligent Spatial Experience Every Organization Will Need to Stay Ahead, explores why many organisations are struggling to deliver this experience and what must change.

The research argues that the real challenge is not the lack of technology, but the way space itself is structured. Many organisations have invested heavily in workplace apps, booking tools and sensors, yet these systems often operate in isolation, creating fragmented experiences for users.

To address this, the report introduces the concept of Spatial Experience – an approach that treats space as an integrated system where spatial data, digital services and human behaviour are connected.

The research identifies four strategic shifts organisations will need to navigate in order to move beyond static environments – from systems that react slowly to environments that respond dynamically, and from blueprint-led planning to approaches shaped by real behavioural data.

As organisations continue to invest in AI, smart buildings and workplace technology, the next competitive advantage lies in creating environments where technology, space and human activity operate as a connected system.
